Welcome to the friendly island! First, a little clarification about the name. Located in the northeastern part of the Caribbean Saint Martin/Sint Maarten, Netherlands Antilles has an interesting geography. Two nations have laid claim on the island known today as Saint Martin or Sint Maarten, depending on which part of the island you're standing on. Through the Treaty of Concordia, signed in 1648, one part of the area is under the jurisdiction of the French government (Saint Martin), while the other part is one of the four constituent countries of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (Sint Maarten).


Philipsburg is the capital of the Dutch side of the island, and it has approximately 40,000 inhabitants, making it the more populous area compared with the northern, French part.
