A little hamlet located between Fort Lauderdale and Miami, Dania Beach in South Florida is a popular tourist destination. Originally a Danish settlement called Modello, Dania is Broward County’s oldest city, having been the first one to be integrated into the county in 1904. From the early 1900’s up to the late 1940’s, Dania was known as the “Tomato Capital of the World”, shipping as much as 1,500 train cartloads of tomatoes per year. However, the tomato industry began to wane with the salination of the fields, as saltwater gradually seeped into the soil. Its relative accessibility to tourists has aided greatly in boosting the city’s economy.
