Though surrounded by several ghost towns, Breckenridge has survived as the area’s stronghold. The town’s streets are lined with plenty of brightly painted Victorian structures, from houses and shops to the quaint cafés. Considered the county’s liveliest towns, Breckenridge welcomes a steady amount of visitors wanting to sample Colorado’s white powder.
Breckenridge was founded as a gold-mining town. New shopping malls and buildings have been added in similar style to the old clapboard buildings, and the town center can get lively in the evening. It is true that the slopes do not cover a huge area and that the town is rather spoiled by out-of-style buildings in parts and a rather Disneyesque feel to other parts. But it has skiing and boarding for all standards, and there are lots of other areas to try on day trips, some covered by a shared lift pass. There are so many slopes you can cover in a week for a minimum charge. It is also preferred because of its placement as the nearest major resort to Denver, so you’ll expect a relatively short transfer.
